Language Requirements

All internationally educated midwives (IEMs) must complete an assessment and gap training/bridging program.  Language testing results will not be required for entry into the Manitoba IEM Assessment and Gap Training Process.  However, you must speak, listen, read and write very well in English to be eligible to practice midwifery in Manitoba.  These skills will be tested during the written and clinical portions of the Manitoba IEM Assessment and Gap Training Process.

A free English language test is available for all immigrants through funding from the Government of Manitoba. The test is called the Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT). It is provided by the Winnipeg English Language Assessment and Referral Centre (WELARC).

Use this free resource to assess your English language skills. Contact WELARC to complete the free test. Once you contact WELARC, it may take up to 6 weeks to schedule an appointment. The language test may take up to 3 hours to complete, depending on your level of English.

After the language test, WELARC can refer you to free English language classes.
